Last week, the Thomas' had me over for dinner once again, followed by a sledding excursion. The night before that, it had snowed maybe an inch, and everything in Charlotte shut-down. People absolutely go crazy here if there's a small dusting of snow. Schools shut-down, businesses close... it's insane! It doesn't snow often here, so they don't have the plows, salt trucks, and experience like we have in Preble County Ohio.
Josh Thomas called me that afternoon, after the sun had come up and the snow was already melted. He said "Dayne, why don't you come on out for dinner, and when it gets dark, we're gonna go sleddin," (picture him saying that in priceless thick southern Louisiana accent). I proceeded to ask "Sledding? Josh, the snow is already watery muck dude!" He responded "Yea, I know, but we've got sprinklers set up all down this hill and we're gonna hose it down and go sledding after dark once it freezes solid!"
Oh what a night... That ice was SOLID. We made our way through the dark with our sleds and flashlights until we arrived at the solid icy hill. Trevin, the daredevil at heart, was the first to step up and try it. I watched as this kid slid all the way down the long hill into the darkness. I couldn't contain myself. I was overcome with laughter; hillbilly sledding had begun. When it was my turn, I jumped on the sled, with my weight meriting me alot of momentum, but I didn't go far. I zoomed straight off the side of the hill into a muddy ditch. My face was covered in mud, but all I could do was laugh. I laughed until I cried, and then I laughed some more. My second go was much more productive than the first. One of the funniest moments was when Josh went. He slammed the ice with not alot of forward momentum, so Christopher and Tyler took off running and hit him in the back, forcing him down the ice... Can you say "Priceless," because it was.
It was a great night, with great company, and a great adventure.
