For a long time, my prayer life has been accompanied by worship music. I love worshiping God outside the Church service confines in my own time, but something is changing with me. I think to often i've tried to use worship music as simply a background record helping me to be more emotional with my time with God. I truly believe that God uses and can even speak to us through our emotions. However, there have been times in my life where I assumed that I had achieved reconciliation with God, or connected with him, because I was crying, or acting somber. Jason Upton is one of my all-time favorite worship leaders. He wrote a song called "In The Silence." It goes like this...
"In this silence, you are speaking,
In the quiet, I can feel the fire,
And its burning, burning deeply,
Burning all that it is that you desire to be silent in me."
I think it's important to note this simple thought. That as Christ followers, we cannot allow ourselves to be governed by human emotions. Although they are powerful, and immeasurable, and my opinion is that they are helpful; we must be careful that they do not overpower our thinking to a point where we make assumptions about God. I have, and will worship God and pray with accompanying music. But I think it's important that we speak to God sometimes in the silence. Even sing and worship in the silence... Understand this: our prayer lives cannot constantly be a monologue, where we speak singularly. God wants us to dialogue with him. He wants to reciprocate, to speak back. Although he may not do it in the most convenient of ways, he does do it. He might use other people to do it, he speaks through scripture, through our emotions, and even though our thinking... And to some, he's even spoken audibly. Whatever way he chooses to speak is impertinent, but he IS speaking. I've sat in the silence, and waited, and listened. I think that God is interested in participating in our lives. It's time we stop sparing God of what we think he already knows, and we begin sharing our dreams and ideas.
A relationship with God is not an accomplishment to acknowledge, it's an adventure to live!!!!
